Argonne History Timeline
May 1925: Groundbreaking for a Dance Hall was financed by New York and Seattle businessman named Thorman.
Late summer 1925: Thorman Country Club opened. One of the many bands to play there was the
U of M Orchestra.
July 1929: L.E. Juilleret purchased the Club from Thorman and continues to operate as a dance hall.
July 1933: Leo W. Powers leased the Club from Juilleret and renamed it The Argonne in memory of this brother who had died in WWI in the Battle of the Argonne Forest in France.
1948: William Matzinger and Charles Filiatroult purchase the Argonne from L.W. Powers. Matzinger and his wife started the shrimp dinners and cole slaw recipe.
1961: Ted and Clara Ager, along with Clara’s sister, Anne and brother-in-law Herb Moore bought the Argonne. The restaurant remained the Argonne and the Agers added their own special touch to the business, their family’s German Bread Recipe.
1986: After Ted passed away, Clara continued to work at the Argonne until she was in her late 70’s. Ted and Clara’s children Cindy Whitley and Steve Ager continued to run the business until November 2018.
November 2018: Georgia businessman Fred Taylor and with his wife Mary Taylor, Michigan natives, purchased the Argonne. Like many others, Fred and Mary have fond memories of the Argonne from their childhoods. They were excited to be presented the opportunity to purchase the restaurant and continue its history and traditions.
Extensive remodeling took place - bringing the building back to its original beauty. The restaurant has retained the original recipes established by the Ager and Matzinger families while adding exciting new options to the menu.
Present: Mrs. Taylor, Chef Jordan Glover, General Manager Wendy Roberts and the entire staff are eager to welcome you to The Argonne House!
